CERIS - CIVIL ENGINEERING RESEARCH AND INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
CERIS is a research unit that operates in the Built and Natural Environment sector and is registered with the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
CERIS joins the expertise of 200 PhD researchers and 200 PhD students. Income from research and consultancy contracts has averaged around 3 M€ per year in the recent past. Besides five Master courses, CERIS researchers are currently engaged in PhD courses leading to nine Doctoral degrees, promoted by its host institution, Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa (UL), and in cooperation with national and international consortia.
MISSION
The mission of CERIS is to create and disseminate scientific knowledge and to promote innovation in the Built and Natural Environment sector through the active involvement in fundamental and applied research, atboth national and international levels, and to enhance higher education and research training.
To accomplish its mission, CERIS operates under a clear set of objectives and organizes its activity in thematic strands selected according to national and European policy guidelines.
OBJECTIVES
CERIS coordinates, under the same host institution, knowledge and skills in theBuilt and Natural Environment sector under the following objectives:
a) To promote quality research based on PhD programs;
b) To transfer its expertise by providing specialized training, services and
ORGANIZATION
CERIS is constituted by three research centres:
CEHIDRO - Centre for Hydro-Systems Studies - is a unit created in 1981 that groups the research in the areas of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Environment. CEHIDRO has averaged 20 PhD integrated members and 40 PhD students organized in three research groups:
> Environment, Water Resources and Water Services;
> Hydrogeology and Geo-systems;
> Pressurised, Fluvial and Maritime Hydraulic Systems;
CESUR - Centre for Urban and Regional Systems - is a unit created in 1975 that groups the research in the areas of Systems Engineering, Transport and Urban, Regional and Environmental Planning. CESUR has over 20 PhD integrated members and close to 50 PhD students organized in three research groups:
> Urban Planning and Environment;
> Systems and Management;
> Transportation Infrastructure, Systems and Policy.
ICIST - Institute of Structural Engineering, Territory and Construction - originated in CMEST, a Structural Engineering research unit created in 1981, which absorbed in 1995 the departmental research in the areas of Construction, Architecture and Territory. ICIST has close to 50 PhD integrated members and nearly 100 PhD students organized in seven research groups:
> Earthquake Engineering and Seismology;
> Mechanics, Modelling and Analysis of Structures;
> Studies in Construction;
> Structural Design and Geotechnics;
> Information and Design Support Systems;
> Concrete Structures;
> Architecture
